Retrograde Planets

Retrograde planets are also known as ‘Vakri Grah’ in Vedic astrology. When a planet appears to be moving backward, it is called retrograde, it is denoted with ‘R’ in the kundli. All planets move clock wise, when a planet appears to be moving backward, it is due to its position and motion of the earth. However, retrograde motion is an astrological concept, in actual it does not happen. Sun and Moon are lumineries and never retrograde. Planets in the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th or 9th houses from the Sun are considered retrograde. Mercury is retrograde three times in a year. Saturn and Jupiter once in a year. Mars and Venus once in a two year. Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde. Retrogression remains for some days or months not the entire period of planet.

Retrograde planet is quite a discussion among the astrologers. All have their opinions. Let’s take a stock on the same.

As per Mr. V. K. Choudhary, founder of System’s Approach; “Though the classical as well as some of the modern commentators have ascribed different views for the results of retrograde planets, the author is of the firm view that retrograde planets are to be treated in a normal way as per their longitudes, so far as the natal influences are concerned. However, the transit influences of a planet appearing to be in retrograde motion and then direct motion are prolonged on a specified degree(s).”

As per some other studies, retrograde planet produce very auspicious results even if they are in the debilitated sign or in the enemy sign, if they are not combust. Retrograssion confers exceptional Cheshtabala to the planets. If more than one planet is retrograde in the kundli, the planet with maximum number of degrees will effect the person more. It is believed that malefic planet when retrograde gives bad result, whereas benefic planet gives very good results such as name, fame, financial success, position etc. In retro mode whether planet gives the result of the previous house or same house is still matter of discussion among astrologer. However, most of them are of opinion that it gives the result of the same house as well as previous house.

Mantreshwar, and epic writer of astrology, in his book has emphasized the importance and benefits of a retrograde planet. He has compared the strength of retrograde planet as equal to exalted planet. On the other hand Saravali says that benefics planet, when retrograde, produce good results; whereas malefics produce bad results. Mahadeva in Jatak-Tattva is also of the same opinion as Saravali.

Here are some other consideration:

1.Any planet owning 1, 5, 9 houses, and if they have not occupied 6,8,12 at the same time, will be helpful to the person.

2.Natural malefics (Sun,Mars,Saturn) if own 4,7,10 houses from Ascendant and are retrograde, will produce good results of the houses they are placed in as well as housed they own.

3.Natural benefics (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Moon) if own 4,7,10 houses from Ascendant and are retrograde, will cause problems for the houses they are placed in and own.

4.An exalted planet when retrograde loses its power, whereas a debilitated planet when retrograde becomes more influencing.

5.The debilitated and retrograde planet situated in its exaltation navamsa becomes very helpful.

6.Retrograde Jupiter gives results of the bhava it occupied at birth, rest give the results of the bhava in which they began retrograding
