There is a great collection of astrology terminology and glossary available on the internet. However, not all of these are required to be studied or understood unless you are going to write a research paper. It is advisable to understand the list of those frequently used prevalent terms which help you to understand and analyse the basic concept of astrology, birth chart and techniques of predictions.
Air Signs: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius are considered air signs. They are very social, good observer, great conversationalist, curious and easily gel with other people. Rather than being emotional, they put a lot of thought process to live their life. Due to this sometimes they feel detached or remote. We need air to live, breath, even earth, fire, and water need air. Just like fire, air could also be life saver or destructive as well, and so they are.
Affliction: In simple term, affliction means ‘stressed’ or ‘bad’. Affliction could be anything: when a planet is debilitated, ill-aspected, badly placed, in bad conjunction, in a sign contrary to it’s nature, or overall strength of the planet is week in the chart. All these or any of these make planet afflicted. Only Jupiter afflictions are not considered severe due to its benefic nature.
Ascendant / Lagna: Ascendant is the point in the zodiac which rises at the time of birth of native with reference to the birth place. Lagna or ascendant is the first house in the chart and a mirror of your life which tells about entire chart and zodiac placements. It represent you as a self like who you are in this life. Ascendant also decides some crucial element of the chart such as functional malefic and benefic planets, strength of other planets, yogakarka planets etc.
Bhava (Houses): The Sanskrit term for “12 houses” in the natal chart, also known as ‘House System’. These 12 houses represent different event/experience of your life. Planets, zodiacs, zodiac lords give the significance of these houses they are sitting in according to their strength. Each house is associated with a particular event such as job, marriage, child, parents, brother, sister, asset, loss, accident etc.
Cardinal Signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn are cardinal signs, also called as moveable signs. They are enterprising people who love to initiate the new things and put their maximum to accomplish the same. Aries guys will do it energetically or sometimes impatiently. They are enthusiastic people who don’t wait to do the things. Cancer people are emotional and sensitive towards their initiation. Librans are balanced in their approach. Capricorn are practical, down to earth while initiating new ideas.
Combustion: When a planet is too close to the Sun due to certain longitudinal distances from Sun, other planets significations are weaken due to Sun’s energy, such a position is called combustion. It is necessary that both Sun and the combust planet should be in the same sign. Combustion is considered bad. Combustion distance is different for different planets: Mars at 17º, Mercury at 14º, Jupiter at 11º, Venus at 10º and Saturn at 15º. When these planet come at mentioned distance on either side of Sun, they are subjected to combustion.
Close Aspect: If the difference in planetary longitudes is within five degrees, then the aspect is known as a close aspect.
Close Conjunction: If the difference in longitudes is within five degrees, the same is known as a close conjunction.
Debilitation: In a particular sign, planets are considered weakest and therefore can deliver the bad results as per their general and particular significations. This is known as debilitated planet. However, this is not always true and even debilitated planet could give good results depending on the placement of planets. It is not a good idea to jump on any conclusion based on the debilitation of any planet.
Drishti: Each planet is believed to aspect fully the seventh house from its own house. It is called as drishti or aspect. It is just like keeping an eye on other’s house from a specific distance. If aspecting planet is benefic or strong, aspected house will be benefited from this drishti. However, if aspecting planet is malefic or weak, aspected house will be affected with its drishti. Aspect or drishti is a very important concept of studying the natal chart.
Dusthana: The 6th 8th and 12th inauspicious houses.
Earth Signs: Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn are known as earth signs in zodiac. Being an earth sign they are very stable, down to earth, practical, dependable, and trustworthy. Earth is the base of everything is this world and so they are. They initiate the things, take responsibility and execute it in the most productive manner. In fact they are the foundation of the zodiacs. Earth never changes, and so they are.
Exact Conjunction: If the difference in longitudes happens to be less than one degree, the resulting conjunction is known as an exact conjunction.
Exact Aspect: when a planet casts its aspect on another planet(s) or on the most effective point of house(s) within an orb of one degree, the aspect is known as an exact aspect.
Fire Signs: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius are known as fire signs. Fire is constructive and destructive as well. You can use fire to accomplish many tasks such as cooking, heating, burning, lighting etc. However, it can also burn anything to ashes. Same goes with the fire people. They are highly unpredictable and temperamental. However, if they prove to be productive, they can do anything as they are the risk taker, dynamic, adventurous, passionate, and enthusiastic.
Fixed Signs: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius.
Ecliptic: Apparent path of the Sun.
Exaltation: In a particular sign, planets are most powerful and provide the best results as per their general and particular significations. This is known as exalted planet.
Kendra (Angular House): 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses are known as Kendra or angular houses. These houses are considered very prominent and powerful especially when benefic planets are placed there. They are treated as the four pillars of the natal chart. 1st house is self, 4th house is your home, 7th house is your spouse, and 10th house is your work.
Kaal Sarp Dosha:
Karaka Grah (Planet) – Significator planet for specific area of life.
Kemadruma Yoga: In Kemadruma yoga, there is no single planet to support the Moon on either side. Traditionally, absence of any planet except sun in 2nd and 12th from Moon creates Kemadruma Yoga.
Kundli (Natal Chart): Astrological chart divided in the 12 houses.
Lord of the House: The lord of the sign placed in a particular house is called the lord of the house.
Luminaries: Sun and Moon.
Malefic Houses: The sixth, eighth and twelfth houses are called malefic houses.
Manglik: Person is considered manglik when Mars is placed in the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth and twelfth houses from the natal ascendant or natal Moon. There is common fear of being manglik among people and they consider it ‘dosha’ or defect which is a misconception and far from truth.
Maraka: In English, it means “killer”, maraka houses or maraka planets can give you death like situations in terms of health or longevity. 2nd and 7th houses are considred as maraka.
Mook Trikona: A planet in its mooltrikona sign is treated as very powerful.
Mutable Signs: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces.
Nakshatras (constellations): The zodiac is divided into 27 groups of fixed stars called nakshatras.
Native: The individual being considered in a natal chart or kundli.
Neechbhang (cancellation of debilitation): A condition of planetary placements when debilitation is no longer valid and does not harm even can benefit.
Planetary Conjunction: The proximity of two or more planets. If difference is less than one degree, it is called exact conjunction; and if it is within five degrees, it is known as a close conjunction.
Planetary Aspects: Each planet is believed to aspect fully the seventh house from its own house.
Retrograde Planets: A planet is retrograde when it appears to be moving backwards when seeing from Earth. However, actually it is now moving backwards, it occurs due to different speeds of the planets in relation to the earth. Generally, retrograde planets are to be treated as normally for astrological calculations.
Rising Sign: Ascendant / Lagna
Shrapit Yoga: The conjunction of Rahu and Saturn in any of the houses in a horoscope forms the Shani Rahu Shrapit Dosha. Some astrologers also consider it to be Shani Rahu Shrapit Dosha when Saturn and Rahu aspect each other. The negative effects of this dosha are a lot when the conjunction of Rahu and Saturn is in the first, fourth, seventh, eighth or the twelfth house of the horoscope and the negative effects may be a bit on the lower side if the dosha is formed in the third, sixth or the eleventh house of the horoscope.
Trikona (Trines): Fifth and ninth houses are known as trikone.
Trik: The 6th 8th and 12th inauspicious houses.
Vimshottari Dasha: Major period of planets.
Water Signs: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces are considered as water signs. These are emotional and sensitive people, sometimes cool and refreshing, and sometimes mysterious. Water shows the level of emotions as it could turn into flood, freeze as ice, or evaporate in the clouds. In the same way these people also behave to the different situations. At the same time, they are very helpful and love to gel with others, but also easily get hurt.
Zodiac: An imaginary belt in the heaven containing 12 signs of 30º each. Each degree can be divided into 60 minutes.
