Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini Yoga, originated from the Sanskrit wordlaya yoga, also known as “the yoga of awareness”, is theprocess of awakening of kundalini energy through yoga, meditation, pranayama, and mantra. In English, kundalini means ‘coiled’ or ‘circular’. What makesKundalini Yoga unique is its efficiency, effectiveness, and its power. You can feel the miraculous changes in your life quickly to feel healthy, happy, and holy—in body, mind and spirit. Kundalini practice includes range of breathing techniques such as anulom vilom, kaplbhati, bhramari to name a few, chanting of mantra, mudra, kriya and yogaasana.

The ultimate purpose of yoga is the awakening of kundalini shakti. Practicing asanas stimulates the chakras and distributes the energy all over the body. About 35 asanas are specifically designed to this purpose e.g bhujangasana, sarvangasana, sirshasana etc. The other asanas regulate and purify the nadis facilitating the conduction of prana throughout the body.

The main object of hatha yoga is to create balance between the pranic and mental forces. Once you achieve this balance, it will awaken your sushumna nadi, the central pathway in the spine, through which kundalini shakti rises to sahasrara chakra illumining the higher version of human consciousness.

Hath yoga not only strengthens the body, but also helps to awaken the higher centers of mind and consciousness responsible for our evolution. It is said to open the third eye within you. It is symbolic representation of another dimension of perception which looks only inside and looks at life completely differently, beyond physical.

Kundalini Awakening

Mind and body are  not separate. The gross form of the mind is body and subtle form of the body is mind. Yoga through asanas integrates these two entities. Mind is embedded in several neurological knots, each knot is associated with corresponding physical-muscular knot. The aim of asanas is to release these mental knots one by one by dealing them onto the physical level. For example emotional tension can interfere in your breathing process causing mild to serious asthma. Muscular problem can occur anywhere in the body in any form, a well chosen asanas combined with pranayama, shatkarmas, meditation and yoga nidra, is most effective in eliminating these mental and physical blocks. The result is the release of dormant energy which makes the body full of vitality, strength, light; and mind full of joy and creativity. The awakening of this dormant and evolutionary energy is the purpose of kundalini.

Kundalini has been described as a term for “a spiritual energy or life force located at the base of the spine on the Muladhara Chakra which is triangular in form and which is the seat of the kundalini shakti” in a coiled form.Experts also call it sleeping serpent, as snake is always coiled while sleeping, however, you can see his energy once he makes a move. In the same way our kundalini is sleeping at the base of spine, and we can feel its energy only when it is awaken. It is basically a science of mind and body to achieve the extreme self-awareness in your highest consciousness. It is said that Lord Shiva is the perfect symbolism of awakened kundalini power as we can see snake around his neck which describe that he has reached to the supreme self cautious and his third eye is active.

How to Activate Kundalini Power

As mentioned by Sri Swami Sivananda in his famous book “Kundalini Yoga”:

“During meditation when you experience divine vision, divine smell, divine taste, divine touch, hear divine Anahata sounds, and receive instructions from God then know that Kundalini Shakti has been awakened. When there is throbbing in Muladhara, when hairs stand on their roots, when the breath stops without any effort, when you repeat Om automatically, when there are no thoughts of the world in the mind, know that Kundalini Shakti has awakened.

When the eyes become fixed on Trikuti (the middle of the eyebrows), when you feel vibrations in different parts inside your body, when you experience jerks like the electricity shocks, when your eyes are so closed and do not open in spite of your exertion, when electric-like currents flow up and down the nerves, know that Kundalini has awakened. When all doubts disappear, when your body becomes light like air, when you involuntarily able to perform different asanas or poses of yoga without the least pain or fatigue, know that Kundalini has become active.”

Kundalini Precautions

Now a days many people talk about awakening the kundalini, however, most of them are not sure that it is and how it is achieved. Remember that your body needs to be fully prepared physically and emotionally to practice kundalini. This preparation in itself takes a good time and a lot of patience for next phase. Don’t rush in by merely reading the books or watching the videos. You need to have a qualified guru for this purpose.

If fact Kundalini Yoga is the most dangerous form of yoga without the necessary preparation due to its potency.Just like if you do not deal with the electricity in a managed way, it becomes lethal.
It in fact is a very fantastic process to make your life out of it, but you need to be able to understand and handle the energy out of it. We all are doing kundalini on daily basis in a haphazard way, we just need to approach it scientifically.
