Video: What is Bharat Stage 6 (BS6)
Bharat stage 6 is emission standards by the Government of India to regulate the output of air pollutants from engines and motor vehicles. The standards are similar to European regulations. It was first introduced in 2000. Since April 2017 all vehicles have to be BS4. In 2016, the Indian government announced that the country would skip the BS V norms altogether and adopt BS VI norms by 2020. In its recent judgment, the Supreme Court has also banned the sale and registration of BS4 motor vehicles in the entire country from 1 April 2020. BS6 will bring down pollution levels, however, it will result in increased vehicle cost due to the improved technology and higher fuel prices. This increase in cost is offset by savings in health costs as there will be lesser amount pollution in the air.
